A future study assesses the impact of telecommuting by computer for California police employees by the year 2001.
Abstract
A nominal group panel identified five trends and five possible future events which were tested for possible impact on the issues. Five trends will increase in the next decade: change in technology, traffic congestion, and concerns for security of police files; conservation of resources; and pollution. Events which could have an impact on the future include a telecommuting requirement for employers of 100 employees or more, the provision of government incentives to public agencies that telecommute, a legislative prohibition on off- site transmission of police files, a telecommuting training mandate, and an employee demand for telecommuting opportunities. A plan, which is flexible and has application throughout law enforcement, is developed to gain the required support for police employees to telecommute. 2 tables and 15 appendixes
