PRACTICAL DIRECTION TO EVALUATIVE RESEARCH WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING IS PROVIDED IN THIS GUIDE TO SUCH TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES AS SURVEYS, CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS, AND OPERATIONS RESEARCH.
Abstract
THE BASIC STRATEGY FOLLOWED IN THIS VOLUME IS TO IDENTIFY CONCEPTS AND PROCEDURES THAT WORK, IN THE SENSE OF PRODUCING OPERATIONALLY USEFUL RESULTS, AND TO EMPHASIZE THE USE OF SUCH CONCEPTS AND PROCEDURES IN THE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF FURTHER RESEARCH. TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH THAT WORKS, AND TO ASCERTAIN TO WHAT EXTENT ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS MAY INFLUENCE THE IMPACT ACHIEVED BY THE RESEARCH, REVIEWS ARE PROVIDED OF NINE EVALUATIONS PUBLISHED BY VARIOUS INDEPENDENT OBSERVERS. ALSO EXAMINED ARE FUNDING CONSIDERATIONS AND THE SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES, SKILLS, AND ATTITUDES THAT HEADS OF CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES HAVE OR NEED IF RESEARCH IS TO BE FACILITATED AND ITS PRODUCTS USED. THE MAJOR PORTION OF THE VOLUME IS DEVOTED TO SUCH BASIC RESEARCH CONCEPTS AND PROCEDURES AS NONEXPERIMENTAL EVALUATIONS, QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES, CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS, COST AND COST-BENEFIT ANALYSES, OPERATIONS RESEARCH, SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, AND SIMULATIONS. CLOSING DISCUSSIONS DEAL WITH METHODS BY WHICH EVALUATIVE RESEARCH IN CORRECTIONS MAY BE USED, THE POSSIBILITY OF MAKING SYSTEMATIC ASSESSMENTS OF THE EVALUATION PROCESS, AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN EVALUATIVE RESEARCH. TABULAR DATA AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED, ALONG WITH SEPARATE SUBJECT AND AUTHOR INDEXES. (KBL) ABSTRACT)
