Contributors to these proceedings highlight the seriousness of the problem of family violence and the challenge facing public health social work professionals but also acknowledge increasing recognition of the issue on the part of policymakers and the development of a variety of creative programs and initiatives in response to the problem.
Abstract
Topics addressed include the ongoing role of child protective services in dealing with family stress and disorganization, domestic violence during pregnancy, the development of community child abuse prevention programs, a team approach to child abuse intervention, AIDS in women and children, child maltreatment, parenting for peaceful families, the application of a psychosocial assessment instrument, and outreach programs for adolescents at risk. Data are reported on the extent of the increase in spousal abuse, homicide, and suicide, and the impact of that violence on subsequent generations. To deal with the issue of family violence, the role of public health is to focus on the social, structural, and interactional factors. 8 tables and 156 references
