Because current trends and developments indicate that fingerprint identification will have a much wider role in law enforcement in the future, the FBI's Identification Division is improving essential services for its criminal justice users through the use of automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS).
Abstract
The Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) will allow a suspect to be fingerprinted at the booking station using live-scan technology and would eliminate fingerprint cards and documents at every step of the process. A local AFIS will process the fingerprint images and personal data and transmit it electronically to a State identification bureau which will forward the data to the FBI's Identification Division if no identification is made. The IAFIS will use integrated architecture, modular design, and integrated implementation using an image transmission network, an advanced AFIS, and an upgraded interstate identification index. The Identification Division is cooperating with Federal, State, and local agencies to ensure that all agencies' requirements are included in the system's design. Illustrations
