In this audio, John Morgan of the Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCoE) describes a new 12-module training program that the FTCoE has developed to train forensic scientists in the leadership and management skills needed to be effective in managing specific functions within a crime laboratory or the laboratory as a whole.

Abstract

The U.S. Justice Department's National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Forensic Technology Center of Excellence, in partnership with the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLAD), has developed a lab leadership and management curriculum that will be delivered through West Virginia University. The modules address such management and leadership issues as the management of people who are diverse in demographics and cultural conditioning, how to use power effectively in the management of people, becoming the manager of laboratory personnel with whom one has been a coworker, building alliances, and how to balance dependability and change. Personal leadership characteristics are also addressed in the curriculum. The backgrounds of some of the instructors are described.
