Abstract
It covers the history, background, and philosophy of the juvenile court, as well as juvenile justice standards, model acts, juvenile legislation, and ethical standards. The textbook also considers U.S. Supreme Court decisions related to juvenile justice, the development of juvenile law, jurisdiction, and the philosophy of parental rights versus children's rights. In addition, textbook chapters focus on education, due process, search, academic dismissal, truancy, school hair regulation, suspension for pregnancy, free speech, athletics, and punishment. Additional topics include juvenile investigation (arrest, search, and confession), juvenile intake procedures and alternatives, status offenders, detention, bail, shelter care, transfer to adult court, certification, waiver, double jeopardy, pretrial discovery and conference, and juvenile capacity and competency. Final chapters examine trial or adjudicatory hearings, proceedings for dependent and neglected children, dispositional proceedings and hearings, dispositional alternatives, postadjudication and disposition, the concept of a constitutional right to treatment, prevention, and successes and failures of the juvenile court. A table of cases is provided.
