A REPORT ON PROGRAMS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE COURTS, CORRECTIONS, LEGAL EDUCATION, CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION FUNDED BY THE FORD FOUNDATION SINCE THE MID-1960'S.
Abstract
PROGRAMS CONCERNING THE ALLOCATION OF POLICE RESOURCES, ORGANIZATIONAL INNOVATION, POLICE PERSONNEL AND TRAINING, COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE, GUIDELINES FOR SENSITIVE AREAS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND PROFESSIONAL AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT ARE FIRST DISCUSSED. DESCRIPTIONS OF PROJECTS WHICH HAVE AIDED REFORMS MAKING LEGAL SERVICES AVAILABLE TO THE POOR AND MINORITIES, AND THOSE WHICH HAVE ATTEMPTED TO SUBSTITUTE WORK, COUNSELING, AND THERAPY IN THE COMMUNITY INSTEAD OF TRIAL OR PRE-TRIAL INCARCERATION ARE PROVIDED. WITH RESPECT TO CORRECTIONS, PROGRAMS ON NEW DESIGNS FOR CORRECTIONS, JAIL REFORM, RIGHTS OF PRISONERS AND EX-OFFENDERS, REHABILITATION, AND VOLUNTEER LAWYER PAROLE AIDES ARE DESCRIBED. OTHER PROJECTS CONCERNING CLINICAL PROGRAMS ON LAW SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, MODEL CODE DEVELOPMENT BY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, PUBLIC INTEREST LAW GROUPS, UNIVERSITY. BASED CRIMINAL JUSTICE INSTITUTES, AND CITIZEN GROUPS WORKING ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROBLEMS ARE OUTLINED AS WELL. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
