This report summarizes statistics of the Missouri Juvenile Court System for calendar year 1992.
Abstract
In 1992, the 45 juvenile courts in Missouri received 73,449 referrals involving 52,948 children; males accounted for 66 percent of the youths referred and blacks accounted for 30 percent of juvenile court youth. The three broad categories of referrals included law violations, status offenses (truancy, running away), and abuse, neglect, and custody (A/N/C) cases. Since 1983, law violation referrals have increased by 73 percent, status offense referrals by 58 percent, and A/N/C referrals by 39 percent. Nearly 70 percent of referrals were initiated by law enforcement agencies. The formal dispositions of referrals recorded in this report included out-of-home placement, in-home placement, no services provided, motion to dismiss, and dismissal for certification; informal dispositions included adjustment without supervision, adjustment with supervision, adjustment-no action, transfer to other juvenile court, transfer to other agency, or referral rejected. Outcomes and child profiles for each category of referral are included. 11 tables, 15 figures, and 7 appendixes
