This monograph from the National Institute on Drug Abuse presents the findings from Monitoring the Future, crosssectional surveys since 1976 that have monitored drug use among college students and adults ages 19-50.
Abstract
The Monitoring the Future surveys contain data on drug use among college students and adults ages 19-50 from 1975 through 2009, and for 8th and 10th grade students from 1991 through 2009. This report, Volume II in this series, presents data on the older age bands based on the longer term follow-up surveys, specifically ages 35, 40, 45, and 50. The information in this report is presented in nine chapters. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the research efforts behind the Monitoring the Future surveys. Chapter 2 contains the key findings from the surveys that look at trends in illicit drug use, trends in alcohol use, trends in cigarette smoking, racial/ethnic comparisons, drug use in eighth grade, and drug use by age 50. Chapter 3 discusses the study design and procedures used in the surveys. Chapter 4 discusses the prevalence of drug use in early and middle adulthood, while chapter 5 examines the trends in drug use in early and middle adulthood. Chapter 6 discusses the attitudes and beliefs about drugs among young adults, while chapter 7 discusses the differing social contexts that can influence an individual's decision to use drugs. Chapter 8 examines the prevalence of drug use among college students, while chapter 9 discusses trends in drug use among college students. Tables, figures, and index
