This report presents results from the 1992 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA).
Abstract
This survey provides information on the use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco among 206 million individuals, age 12 and older in the United States during 1992. Chapter 1 provides a description of the NHSDA, including history, purposes, and methods of the survey, and guidelines for interpreting statistics presented. Chapter 2 discusses the overall prevalence and decline (between 1991 and 1992) of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use in the surveyed population. Chapter 3 outlines marijuana use findings. Chapter 4 examines cocaine consumption. Chapter 5 explores inhalants and hallucinogens issues among current users. Chapter 6 presents information on nonmedical use of psychotherapeutic drugs (stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, and analgesics requiring a prescription). Chapter 7 describes alcohol use as the most widely used psychoactive drug in the surveyed population. Chapter 8 examines the population's habit of cigarette smoking. Chapter 9 discusses the problems associated with drug use. Chapter 10 explores patterns of use of alcohol, cigarettes, inhalants, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin. Chapter 11 provides information of special topics regarding the relationship between drug use and welfare assistance, lack of health insurance, substance abuse treatment, and risk from regular use of drugs. Chapter 12 examines drug use and prevalence rates in six more sampled metropolitan areas (Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Washington, DC). Tables and appendixes
