This is a report of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Research Staff concerning substance use patterns among student athletes during the 4 year period between 1997 and 2001
Abstract
Since 1985, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has studied the substance abuse rates of student athletes. The NCAA reports its findings every 4 years. The 1997 report differs from past reports in that all NCAA schools and all NCAA sports were represented in the survey sample. The study discusses the 21 findings suggested by the study data and grouped into categories that include ergogenic drug use, social drug use, substance use among ethnic and sport groups, frequency and initial use of drugs, cause of drug use, causes of drug avoidance, sources of drugs, perceptions of drug use among student athletes, and student athletes attitudes regarding drug testing. Steroid and amphetamine use has increased, with steroid use increasing across all NCAA divisions. 21 tables, appendix
