Abstract
This 2010 annual report by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services presents information on domestic incidents involving elderly persons that were reported to law enforcement agencies in New York City. Highlights from the report include the following: in the first 9 months of 2009, 2,817 DIRs (domestic incident reports) were filed with law enforcement agencies in York City, while 2,891 DIRs were filed in the first 9 months of 2010; family relationships accounted for the majority of elderly DIRs in both 2009 (90.1 percent) and 2010 (89.5 percent); elderly victims involved in DIRs were more likely to be victimized by their children and/or their grandchildren; in both 2009 and 2010, the majority of elderly victims were female, 71.3 percent and 71.4 percent, respectively, while the majority of suspects in both years were male, 63.3 percent and 63.7 percent, respectively; and most DIRs involving elderly persons did not result in an offense being recorded. Data for this report were obtained from a database maintained by the State's Division of Criminal Justice Services that compiles information from DIRs, a standardized form completed by law enforcement officers for all alleged incidents of domestic violence. The report also includes information on the 2010 activities of the New York State Committee for the Coordination of Police Services to Elderly Persons. 1 table
