This bulletin compares New York State final felony processing data for 1992 with final felony processing data for 1991.
Abstract
New York State felony indictments and Superior Court Informations (SCI's) totaled 75,944 in 1992, down by 3 percent from the 78,073 indictments/SCI's reported in 1991. Both drug and violent felony indictments/SCI's contributed to the overall decrease. Drugs, which accounted for 40 percent of the indictment/SCI total, were down by 2 percent; and violent felonies, which accounted for 34 percent of the total, declined by 3 percent. Convictions from felony indictments/SCI's decreased by 4 percent from 1991 to 1992. Statewide, drug convictions decreased by 3 percent, with New York City down by 6 percent and the suburban area of New York City down by 2 percent. Drug convictions had a 14- percent increase upstate. Prison sentences decreased by 5 percent, down from 29,387 in 1991 to 27,901 in 1992. Sentences to prison for drug convictions and violent felony convictions were also down by 5 percent. Felony processing times varied widely among the geographical areas. New York City processed a felony case from arrest to indictment in 19 days compared to 82 days in the suburban area of New York City and 72 days upstate. From indictment to disposition, 103 days were required in New York City versus 27 days in the suburban area of New York City and 71 days upstate. 5 tables and 3 figures.
