Abstract
NIJ is proud to announce the development of a new bomb suit standard for public safety and a certification program for ensuring that bomb suits are tested and meet the requirements of the standard. Research was performed by the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering (RD&E) Center. Currently there is no other standard for bomb suits worn by U.S. public safety bomb technicians. The NIJ standard was developed at the request of the National Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board (NBSCAB). The new standard covers minimum requirements for form and fit, performance, testing, documentation and labeling of personal protective equipment designed to protect bomb technicians from fragmentation, some blast overpressure, impact and flame associated with the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED).
