This edition of the newsletter of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) reports on recent "special features" of OJJDP activities and summarizes other news related to OJJDP's work.
Abstract
One featured OJJDP activity is its provision of a series of in-person and webinar-facilitated training programs for state representatives to assist them in bringing their states into compliance with the core requirements of the federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. The training occurred on September 12-15, 2017. Another featured OJJDP activity is the first anniversary of the U.S. Justice Department's "Changing Minds" campaign, which is supported by OJJDP. This is a national public education campaign to raise awareness of the urgency and prevalence of childhood trauma and change perspectives about the impact of children's exposure to violence. The intent is to encourage adults who regularly interact with children and youth to address such trauma. Other special events reviewed are the U.S. Justice Department's convening of the National Public Safety Partnership Summit; OJJDP sessions at the Probation and Parole Association's meeting for the purpose of highlighting justice system improvements related to reentry; and OJJDP's sponsorship of a program designed to strengthen bonds between young fathers and their children. Brief descriptions are provided for eight other activities by OJJDP, as well as upcoming events.
