THIS PUBLICATION EXAMINES THE PEACE OFFICER'S CONTACT WITH CITIZENS HAVING HEARING, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS.
Abstract
DEVELOPED AS A POLICE TRAINING AID FOR RECOGNIZING AND COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY WITH THESE PEOPLE, THE BOOKLET DESCRIBES THE OVERT CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS DISORDERS AND PROVIDES OFFICERS WITH SIMPLIFIED METHODS AND SIGNS FOR COMMUNICATING THEIR QUESTIONS AND INTENTIONS. A GLOSSARY OF PERTINENT VOCABULARY IS INCLUDED, AS ARE EXAMPLE PUBLIC CONTACT SCENARIOS IN WHICH OFFICERS CAN TEST THEIR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE THEIR DEALINGS WITH THE HEARING- OR SPEECH-HANDICAPPED.
