Abstract
This document provides information for law enforcement personnel on the use of probation and parole for criminal offenders. The brochure begins with a brief discussion on the definition of and circumstances in which probation and parole are used. This is followed by a discussion about probation and parole officers, how they are different, what certification and training they are required to have, if any, and the differences between adult and juvenile probation and parole officers. The brochure also notes that some community corrections agencies have realized the need for probation and parole officers to have specialized caseloads, specifically those dealing with sex offenders, offenders with mental illness, domestic violence offenders, and former gang member offenders. The brochure highlights the ways that law enforcement and community supervision agencies can work together to benefit both groups, reduce crime, and improve the reentry chances for offenders.
