This report presents a statistical profile of female inmates and their infants who, in 1992, utilized the Bedford Hills and Taconic Nursery Program, operated by the New York State Department of Correctional Services.
Abstract
During 1992, there were 105 participants in the two nursery programs. Sixty-eight percent of the female inmates were committed for drug offenses and 69 percent had a history of prior adult convictions. The mean minimum sentence was 23.0 months for the inmates, who ranged in age from 16 to 38 years. Most women were either black or Hispanic; 76 percent were single and 73 percent had children other than those in the nurseries. Women discharged from prison in 1992 had spent an average of 7.3 months in the program. Of the seven women profiled in this report, four were discharged with their babies, two had placed their babies in foster care, and one had sent her baby home to live with her mother.
