This report presents a statistical overview of the legal and demographic profiles of the 105 women offenders who participated in the Bedford Hills and Taconic (New York) nursery program in 1992.
Abstract
Of the 105 participants, who were between the ages of 16 and 38, 68 percent were committed for drug offenses and 69 percent had a history of prior adult convictions. Sixty-two percent of the women had been committed from New York City; this sample had a mean minimum sentence of 23 months. Seventy- six percent of these women inmates were single, and 73 percent had other children. Most were black or Hispanic. Women discharged in 1992 had spent an average of 7.3 months in the program. Seven profiles were used to illustrate these statistics; upon discharge, two of the women placed their babies in foster care, one sent her baby to live with the maternal grandmother, and four mothers remained with their babies. 12 tables
