The United Nations Economic and Social Council reports on the progress made in the implementation of the various provisions of resolution 1992/22, which recommends measures to improve international and member-state crime prevention and criminal justice operations.
Abstract
This report highlights the initial steps taken by various United Nations agencies to apply the resolutions and decisions of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice adopted at its first session. Information addresses relevant actions by the Economic and Social Council as well as the General Assembly. Another section of the report describes progress in the establishment of a subprogram on operation activities, planning, and overall coordination. This subprogram expects to increase the possibilities for practical assistance to states, with an emphasis on upgrading their capacities to address crime and ensure justice. Another major section of the report focuses on administrative changes in the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Branch to implement the decisions of the Commission. A description of operational activities in the priority areas encompasses transnational crime, especially organized, economic, and environmental criminality; crime prevention in urban areas, with an emphasis on violent and juvenile criminality; and efficiency, fairness, and improvement in the administration of criminal justice. This section also reports on advisory services and assistance to peace-keeping operations for the reinforcement of democracy and justice. Remaining report sections address criminal justice statistics and information, collaboration and coordination, the creation of a mechanism to mobilize resources for technical cooperation, the desirability of an instrument for international cooperation in crime prevention and criminal justice, and activities of the Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. 5 notes
