This document is the summary report on research to prevent child maltreatment presented at the Workshop on International Epidemiological Studies.
Abstract
The Workshop on International Epidemiological Studies was held in September 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey at the 19th ISPCAN (International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect) International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect. This report contains summaries of the research presented at the workshop along with an interview with Dr. Christopher Mikton of the World Health Organization. In this interview, Dr. Mikton answers questions on the relevance of science for child protection, the challenges in the fields of meta-analysis, and the outcomes of the workshop. The report also discusses the challenges that exist in research on child abuse and neglect issues. A set of recommendations to deal with the challenges was developed by the researchers at the workshop. These recommendations deal with guidelines, instrument standardization, reporting standardization, dissemination, the creation of a Web site, and the convening of more frequent meetings and conferences. The appendix contains short summaries of the research presented during the workshop.
