Addressed to California correctional personnel, this document provides information for protection against occupational exposure to the Hepatitis B virus and the human immunodeficiency virus.
Abstract
The guidelines emphasize that the tasks do not comprise a complete list of potential exposure to infected blood and body fluids. Instead, they cover the most common ones. Personnel are reminded that they cannot tell by looking whether a person is infected with a communicable disease and should use universal precautions, based on the assumption that everyone is potentially infectious. The guidelines present general principles of hepatitis and AIDS prevention and discuss specific procedures to protect against exposure during the collection of urine samples, skin checking of intravenous drug users, the handling of violent or disciplinary incidents, handling an injured or ill person, providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and performing other tasks. Actions to take if exposure occurs are also listed. Glossary
