This guidebook was published as part of the AIDS Education for Emergency Workers Project, established in 1976 and coordinated by the Sacramento Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and funded by the California Department of Health Services.
Abstract
The Project has developed a nationally renowned curriculum for AIDS education through which its Master Trainer teams conduct "train the resource/trainer" courses throughout California. These resource/trainers then instruct public safety workers. All individuals who complete these courses receive this guidebook that provides information reflecting the current scope of AIDS research, discussing in detail how HIV is transmitted. Clear, specific suggestions, based on a Centers for Disease Control document on prevention and decontamination to reduce the risk of accidental exposure to HIV, are described. The final chapter outlines information on Federal, California, and local laws affecting public safety workers. A resource section lists government agencies, hotlines, national organizations, professional organizations in California, and AIDS contractors and community groups in California.
