These essays presented at the 1993 Workshop of the Homicide Research Working Group focus on the application of the public health perspective to violence prevention; violence intervention strategies based on data analysis; homicide datasets; spatial analysis of homicide; victim precipitation in homicides; and how to manage large, hierarchical, homicide databases.
Abstract
Four essays pertain to public health and public safety. They include a public health perspective on violence prevention, the impact of homicide on life chances, life chances of becoming a homicide victim, and a young male lifespan perspective on homicidal violence. Four essays on violence intervention strategies based on data analysis profile a violence-prevention program for young African- American males, an examination of the production and direction of lethal violence, the relationship between drugs and violence, and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Eight essays describe various homicide datasets, and six essays address the theory, method, and practice of the spatial analysis of homicide and other violent crimes. Four essays on victim violence precipitation consider victim precipitation in victimology and the law, the meaning and measurement of victim precipitation, victim-precipitated killings, and clemency for battered women who kill. The concluding set of three essays discusses how to manage large hierarchical databases for easy and efficient access to incident, victim, and offender information. 32 figures and 22 tables
