This report summarizes the numbers of offenders sentenced to imprisonment by magistrates' courts and crown courts in England and Wales in 1990.
Abstract
In all, over 1.5 million persons were sentenced by these courts; of these, 341,700 were sentenced for indictable crimes. Of those sentenced, over 41,000 received a sentence of immediate imprisonment, while an additional 16,000 were sentenced to detention in young offender facilities. Another 16,659 persons were imprisoned for fine default. The crown courts sentenced 90,400 persons in 1990, of whom 43 percent were either sentenced to immediate imprisonment or to detention in a young offender institution. Another 1,200 persons who had committed summary offenses received immediate custodial sentences. While the magistrates' courts sentenced over 1.4 million persons in 1990, they are only empowered to impose sentences of up to 6 months, and therefore, the people they sentenced formed a small proportion of the daily prison population. 2 references
