After reviewing the extent of school crime nationwide, this technical assistance bulletin briefly describes exemplary Federal, State, and local programs designed to counter such crime.
Abstract
The bulletin first describes the goals, structure, and activities of the National School Safety Center (NSSC), established under Federal funding to promote information exchange on school crime prevention. Particular attention is given to NSSC-sponsored students' safe-school programs, which are designed to promote improved school attendance, delinquency prevention, and conflict resolution. Also described is a pilot program, cosponsored by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education, which is designed to improve schools' capabilities for addressing criminal incidents and disciplinary infractions by involving school administrators, police, teachers, students, and parents. Efforts by the legal community to enhance school safety are highlighted as well. Programs in Miami, Fla.; Charlottesville and Albemarle, Va.; Seattle, Wash.; Mesa, Ariz.; and a statewide California program are briefly described. The Youth School Watch program in Miami, Fla., has each school select a special problem and design its own response. The TIPS program (Teaching Individuals Protective Strategy; Teaching Individuals Positive Solutions) in Albemarle and Charlottesville is a State pilot program consisting of a crime resistance curriculum. The Seattle program focuses on improving student learning and proper school behavior. The Mesa program is designed to keep youth in school, and the California program promotes interagency cooperation to produce a comprehensive school crime prevention plan. 7 suggested readings and 2 bibliographic resources.
