This article discusses several features of handgun models that law enforcement agencies should examine when selecting and issuing new handguns within their agencies.
Abstract
Law enforcement agencies sometimes issue new firearm models when there are new handgun developments, administration changes, and evolution of equipment, as well as input from weapons staff members. Decisions by law enforcement agencies concerning firearms are of great importance. Agencies need to make decisions and choices based on a consideration of a department’s needs and the physical requirements and expertise of their officers, thereby selecting the best weapons for their personnel. This article presents several features and options of handgun models to aid law enforcement agencies in making choices based on the needs of the department. Features described include: action, caliber, materials and finish, size and associated magazine capacity, safeties, sights and light mounts, and ease of care and maintenance.
