Abstract
Data are first presented for Australia and then for its six States and two territories. Within each of these sections, statistics are organized into seven groups. A general category covers population, marriage, divorce, male-female ratio, urbanization, unemployment, and workforce participation. Other subject areas are gross domestic product, housing construction, motor vehicle registration, infant mortality, life expectancy, and expenditures on social services. Statistics on the police force, police expenditures, and crime reported and cleared are detailed, followed by data on offenses brought before the magistrates' courts and the higher courts. A wide range of offenses are analyzed, including murder, assault, rape, robbery, burglary, larceny, fraud, drunkenness, and traffic violations. Within the prisons category, tables describe the daily average number of prisoners and prison expenditures. Data on drug offenses are collected only for Australia as a whole, although the statistics are broken down by type of drug, age and sex of persons charged with drug offenses, and type of offense. Information on children in conflict with the law is provided for each State and territory, but organization and content vary. Definitions of all statistical categories and a bibliography are included.
