In an effort to reduce drug use among students from kindergarten through college, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with the support of other influential national organizations, established the Sports Drug Awareness Program (SDAP) in 1984.
Abstract
The SDAP emphasizes the role of the coach and the student athlete in preventing drug abuse among youth. The goal of phase I is to reach 48,000 coaches in 20,000 high schools across the country, who can in turn help reach 5.5 million student athletes. Pilot programs in two high schools have significantly reduced drug abuse in those schools. SDAP has provided training in prevention and peer counseling for student athletes, who have mounted programs for students that emphasize achievement in sports and academics as an alternative to drugs. Coaches have received information on how to start a drug abuse prevention program in their schools. Phase II of the program has recruited professional athletes such as Ralph Sampson of the Houston Rockets to represent SDAP. These athletes have taped public service announcements for national TV and radio to influence youth against drugs. 6 footnotes.
