Abstract
The first chapter provides statistics and analysis of the attitudes, opinions, fears, and practices of Ohio's citizens regarding crime and criminal justice. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the criminal event and addresses such issues as the nature of crime, how crimes are grouped into felony or misdemeanor levels, how crime is measured, whether it is increasing or decreasing, where crime is located, and the types of weapons used. A chapter on the offender considers how society views criminal behavior, what motivates criminals, other factors in criminality, innate characteristics associated with criminality in Ohio, female criminality, the seriousness of black-on-black crime, offender profiles, career criminality, and victim-offender relationships. The chapter on victims highlights data on the nature of victimization; factors relating to risk, cost, and personal characteristics; and treatment of victims within the criminal justice system. The remaining five chapters address the law enforcement function, the State courts, criminal sanctions, new directions and technologies, and policy implications. Extensive figures and tables
