This Fact Sheet reports data on juveniles in public facilities in the United States as of February 15, 1995.
Abstract
On this date, public juvenile facilities in the United States held 69,075 juveniles in residential custody. Public juvenile facilities include secure and non-secure facilities that hold pre- and post-adjudicated individuals under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. Nearly 96 percent of juveniles in public facilities nationwide were there because of a delinquent offense. A small number were held for status offenses, i.e., offenses that are not illegal for persons who have reached the age of majority or another age established by law. Six States together held half of all juveniles in custody in public facilities: California, Ohio, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois. The average State juvenile custody population in public facilities was 1,351. This information was obtained from the 1995 Census of Juvenile Detention , Correctional, and Shelter Facilities. A table shows the total juveniles in public facilities by State.
