This report presents guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders in the area of group therapy under the Treatment Improvement Protocol 41 developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).
Abstract
Group therapy and substance abuse treatment are seen as natural allies. The capacity of group therapy to bond patients to treatment is an important asset. Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders. TIPs draw on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts. This report presents TIP Number 41 in the group therapy field with the primary audience served, substance abuse treatment counselors. The TIP manual consists of seven chapters and includes: (1) defining therapeutic groups as those with trained leaders and a primary intent to help people recover from substance abuse; (2) describing the purpose, main characteristics, leadership, and techniques of five group therapy models and groups; (3) discussing the many considerations to be weighed before placing a client in a particular group; (4) comparing fixed and revolving types of therapy groups and recommends ways to prepare clients for participation; (5) the stages of treatment--early, middle, and late; (6) explaining the how-to of TIP; and (7) highlighting training opportunities available and recommending the supervisory group to improve group leadership and insight. Throughout the TIP, the term substance abuse is used to refer to both substance abuse and substance dependence. Appendixes A-H and index
