This report from the Kansas Sentencing Commission presents the 10-year projection from fiscal year 2011 through fiscal year 2020 for the type of prison beds that the State will need based on the projected total number of prison beds needed for the same period.
Abstract
Each fiscal year (FY) the Kansas Sentencing Commission (KSC) develops two separate prison population forecasts: the total number of prison beds needed by the State for a 10-year period, and a projection of the types of prison beds needed by the State for the same 10-year period. The types of prison beds used to accommodate the prison population include maximum security, medium high security, medium low security, minimum security, special management, and unclassified beds. The KSC found that by the end of FY 2011, the State will need 362 unclassified beds, 764 special management beds, 1,023 maximum security beds, 1,575 medium high security beds, 2,574 medium low security beds, and 2,820 minimum security beds for its entire prison population. By the end of FY 2020, the KSC projects that the State will need 409 unclassified beds, 933 special management beds, 1,320 maximum security beds, 2,115 medium high security beds, 2,905 medium low security beds, and 3,286 minimum security beds. The projections for changes in the types of prison beds needed by the State for the 10-year period are also discussed according to gender. Tables and figures
