Abstract
Figures are shown for individual index offense categories and Index totals. In 1992, there were 1,058,586 index offenses in the State--a 6-percent decrease from the 1991 total of 1,126,503. The rate per 100,000 population was 5,842, compared to 6,238 in 1991. Violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) decreased 4.7 percent; property crimes (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) decreased 6.3 percent. The number of murders dropped from 2,557 to 2,382. Among counties and boroughs, Manhattan had the highest total index crimes (187,947) and rate (12,553.7 per 100,000) in 1992. These figures were lower than in 1991 (209,177 and 14,019 per 100,000). In both years, Brooklyn had the highest numbers in each violent crime category and burglary.
