The program plan describes the Institute's training, technical assistance and information dissemination, and policy/program development and evaluation activities.
Abstract
The grant/contract program is one of the institute's means of carrying out its legislative mandates. Those eligible for grants include State agencies, general units of local government, educational institutions, public and private agencies, Federal agencies, organizations, and individuals. The National Academy of Corrections provides the central location for training that the Institute had previously conducted regionally through contractors. This year, both a management series and a specialty training unit will be offered. Several technical assistance grants are offered to assist in the planning of new correctional institutions, in the design of prison classification systems, and in upgrading local jail operations. Policy and program development efforts will emphasize the development of strategies to deal with prison overcrowding, collection of data about the increase of racial minorities in prisons and jails, and development of a policy guide to improve prison industries. Grant funds are mentioned.
