This Fiscal Year 2016 Data Analysis Report for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Victim Compensation Formula Grant Program provides statistics and information on the population characteristics of those who sought victim compensation in the states, the victim compensation application process, and victimization types.
Abstract
This report indicates that all 53 recipients of Victim Compensation Formula Grant funds submitted performance data for Federal Fiscal Year 2016. The data indicate that 59 percent of victims applying for compensation were females. The ages of applicants ranged from 25-59 (33 percent). The majority of victims applying for victim compensation benefits in 2016 identified themselves as White Non-Latino/Caucasian (33 percent), Black/African-American (22 percent), or Hispanic/Latino (18 percent). Grantees received a total of 288,536 applications for victim compensation in FY 2016, which included applications for sexual assault forensic examinations, and paid a total of $348,745,017 toward victim compensation benefits. The U.S. Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crime has gained new insight from this report regarding how its grantees allocate funds for victims with varying needs, particularly the ability to examine data by crime type with subcategories and to investigate emerging victimization trends. 5 tables and 16 figures
