TABLES AND DISCUSSION CONCERN RESIDENTS IN WISCONSIN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL RESIDENTIAL CENTERS ON DECEMBER 31, 1978, WITH 5-YEAR TRENDS FOR 1974-78.
Abstract
BY THE END OF 1978, THE ADULT MALE POPULATION ROSE BY 3.7 PERCENT FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND THE NUMBER OF FEMALES DECLINED. MEDIAN LENGTH OF TIME IN INSTITUTIONS ROSE STEADILY FOR MALE RESIDENTS AS DID THE PROPORTION OF MEN ENTERING PRISONS AS NEW ADMISSIONS. BURGLARY AND ROBBERY WERE THE MOST PREVALENT OFFENSES COMMITTED BY MEN; 22 PERCENT OF WOMEN WERE SENTENCED FOR FORGERY OR ISSUING WORTHLESS CHECKS. THE PROPORTION OF NONWHITE MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS DECLINED. MEDIUM LENGTH OF SENTENCE DECLINED FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, AND MEDIAN TIME IN THE INSTITUTION INCREASED FOR MEN BUT NOT FOR WOMEN. OF THE 73 MEN AND 21 WOMEN RESIDENTS IN COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTERS, ALL BUT 1 OF THE 94 PERSONS HAD BEEN COMMITTED FOR FELONIES, 80.9 PERCENT WERE FROM MILWAUKEE, AND NEARLY 73.4 PERCENT WERE NONWHITE. TABLES PRESENT INFORMATION ON SELECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF ADULT MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS BY INSTITUTION (I.E., TYPE OF COMMITMENT, ADMISSION STATUS, OFFENSE, RACE, AGE, LENGTH OF SENTENCE, AND COUNTY OF COMMITMENT) FOR MALE AND FEMALE RESIDENTS. ALSO ILLUSTRATED ARE THE NUMBERS OF RESIDENTS IN COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL RESIDENTIAL CENTERS BY COUNTY OF COMMITMENT AND TIME INSTITUTIONALIZED. (WJR)
