This educator's guide helps teachers, principals and guidance counselors identify children who have been or may be exposed to woman abuse and to provide appropriate support and referrals.
Abstract
Each year, children and adolescents are exposed to violence in their homes, schools, neighborhoods. A significant proportion of these young people are exposed to woman abuse, abusive behavior used by an intimate partner to control and dominate a woman. Students touched by this form of violence often experience short- and long-term impacts that may affect their readiness and ability to learn in terms of literacy, numeracy, and social skills. This guide and an accompanying facilitator's manual were developed by an expert panel formed as part of the Ontario Government's Domestic Violence Action Plan. This guide and the manual were developed for educators, with the aim of better supporting women and their children, and reducing abuse. The guide focuses on the effects on elementary school students when violence is perpetrated against their mothers by male partners. The guide contains information that will help educators learn about woman abuse and its impact on children and adolescents, gain information about resources available to mothers who may be victims of woman abuse, recognize the signs that students may display when they are living with woman abuse, and learn ways to support students and some strategies to deal with challenging behaviors in school.
