In compliance with the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2016, which provided $75 million for the Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (CSSI), as well as the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017, which provided $50 million for CSSI, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) presents this FY 2017 report on the continued development of a strategy and model for comprehensive school safety.

Abstract

This report satisfies the reporting requirements for both FY 2016 and FY 2017. The CSSI, which is administered by NIJ, was launched in FY 2014. NIJ implements CSSI in collaboration with subject-matter experts from multiple relevant disciplines, including other executive branch agencies and Congress. CSSI is designed to improve the safety of schools and students nationwide by developing, supporting, and evaluating school safety programs, practices, and strategies. An important component of the CSSI is the partnerships between school professionals and researchers in developing and testing approaches that address the safety needs and priorities of America's schools and students. This report presents the goals, guiding principles, activities, and accomplishments for CSSI, including the grants awarded in FY 2016 and FY 2017. As currently funded CSSI projects conclude, NIJ will report their findings and act to translate these findings into practice. The appendices contain the FY 2016 and FY 2017 project lists and project summaries.
