This Fact Sheet profiles federal funding and resources available to support Tribal jurisdictions in their efforts to develop and implement effective programs for juveniles.

Abstract

The federal resources available for this effort are administered under the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ's) Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS), which was established in FY 2010 in response to concerns raised by Tribal leaders about the DOJ's grant process, which did not provide the flexibility Tribes needed to address their criminal justice and public safety needs. Through CTAS, federally recognized Tribes and Tribal consortia can submit a single application for most of DOJ's Tribal grant programs. CTAS is not a program, but rather is the overarching structure under which 10 separate grant program applications are collected. The intent of Purpose Area 9 is to provide federal funding and other resources for the support of Tribal efforts to create, expand, or strengthen juvenile delinquency prevention, intervention, and treatment. The U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), which administers resources delivered for Purpose Area 9, recommends that applicants propose a project that initially focuses on one aspect of juvenile delinquency prevention, intervention, or treatment, based on determined need. OJJDP also recommends that applicants for funding under the Tribal Youth Program (TYP) develop proposals with broad, tribal-wide planning efforts and community support. Information is provided for ongoing support, funding and eligibility, benefits, and strategies.
