This bulletin highlights a number of topics in the investigation and prosecution of gang crime.
The first article explains why indicia search warrants afford prosecutors the opportunity to locate and introduce some of the most powerful and vivid evidence of a gang's criminal association. The second article focuses on the narrow goal of prosecuting major street gangs utilizing the Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces Program, which explicitly targets organized crime cases that often include major gangs. The third article provides examples and resources about how traditional gang related enterprises are expanding from drug and weapons trafficking to sex trafficking. The fourth article looks at how gang activity is expanding into white collar crimes, specifically stolen identity refund fraud schemes. The fifth article explores prosecuting Sureño Gangs, which means "southerners" in Spanish and is an umbrella term for predominantly Latino gangs, beyond Los Angeles. Additional topics covered in this issue include: the Justice Department's international resources on criminal gang issues and capacity building; expert codebreakers in court; using digital fingerprints for investigations involving electronic evidence; combating witness intimidation in gang-related prosecutions and applying the New Orleans strategy to fight violent street crews with a focused deterrence strategy.
