A private company called LINC presents its research findings on how cities and counties that participate in the National Institute of Justice Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) program can use DUF data more productively.

Abstract

Program managers participated in telephone, mail, and fax surveys. Some significant findings are summarized as follows: 1) In addition to planners and managers in law enforcement agencies, policymakers and administrators in many other State and local agencies dealing with drug abuse are using and can make better use of DUF findings in their work; 2) Administrators in many sites are already using federally published DUF findings about drug use in their regions; 3) For State and local applications, the most useful DUF data are the results of laboratory tests showing the proportions of arrestees who use specific types of drugs; and 4) Three identified groups of DUF data users generally require different types of data and prefer different formats. These findings are explained in further detail in the sections of this report; LINC computer programs and other products are introduced as relevant to the subject matter in each section. 5 endnotes, 16 references
