Eighty participants, representing approximately 30 local jurisdictions and several Federal agencies, discussed various aspects of computer mapping technology and explored ideas for Federal-local partnerships to address issues of information- sharing. The meeting sessions included an overview of NIJ mapping initiatives and applications of crime mapping at the Department of Justice, as well as a description of possible future directions. One substantive session focused on the use of computer mapping by police departments in Pittsburgh and San Diego in their efforts to control drug markets. Sessions with police chief executives from across the country highlighted policy issues at the Federal and local levels, confidentiality issues, integration of database issues, and hardware and software issues. 2 appendixes
