This video with accompanying transcript presents interviews with Geoffrey Alpert and Gary Cordner, chief research advisors for the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (LEADS) Program, who comment on the benefits of this program.

Abstract

In addition, LEADS scholars (those who have participated in the program) speak from their experience of the program's benefits. Those interviewed note that LEAD's intent is to prepare law enforcement personnel to lead their agencies in applying data analysis and research-based evidence of what works to improve the cost-effectiveness of law enforcement. The LEADS scholars interviewed indicate that the program has increased their appreciation for targeted data collection and analysis as the foundation for developing policies and practices that improve public safety. Further, it has made them aware of the resources that can be accessed for help in applying research to particular policing issues. Geoffrey Alpert envisions the LEADS Agencies Program linking with the LEADS Scholars Program, so that the issues and challenges identified by agencies can influence the content of research pursued by LEADS scholars. The scholars are then better prepared to become leaders in addressing the priority challenges faced by their agencies.
