This article describes the computer software program, School COPS, which helps administrators analyze and map security problems or incident hot spots at school.
Abstract

The software, which is available at no-cost, was developed by Abt Associates with funding from the National Institute of Justice and has four main characteristics: (1) incidents occurring at school are entered daily, saving personnel the time it takes to complete the required monthly or annual reports; (2) it displays incidents involving a particular student; (3) it produces graphics showing school hot spots and year-to-year trends, such as showing a map of where bullying incidents have occurred on a school campus; and (4) it provides evidence of activities undertaken or problems solved. School COPS was originally developed for use in elementary and high schools but has been modified for use in correctional settings (Facility COP), post-secondary schools, law enforcement gang and narcotics units, and hospitals, which use the system for tracking security infractions and alarms. The School COPS software is available for free download at www.schoolcopssoftware.com. Contact information is provided.
