TREATMENT OF CRIMINALS WHO DEMONSTRATE BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS, BUT ARE NEITHER PSYCHOTIC NOR MENTALLY DEFECTIVE.
Abstract
ABNORMAL OFFENDERS ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS PAPER AS PERSONS WHO MAKE DEMANDS ON THEIR ABILITIES WHICH EXCEED THE POSSIBILITIES (EITHER MENTAL OR PHYSICAL) THEY HAVE FOR SATISFYING THESE DEMANDS. THE TREATMENT FOR THIS CLASS OF OFFENDER CONSISTS OF AN ATTEMPT TO AUGMENT THEIR POSSIBILITIES AND/OR LOWER AMBITIONS SO THAT OFFENDERS CAN MEET DEMANDS ON THEMSELVES. ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS CATEGORY IS THE CHRONIC CRIMINAL WHO IS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN A REASONABLE WORKING SITUATION. THE AUTHOR ADVOCATES GIVING THIS GROUP OF CRIMINALS A TYPE OF DISABILITY PENSION, WHICH WOULD ALLOW THEM TO BECOME ESTABLISHED ON THEIR OWN AND TO REEVALUATE THEIR OWN SITUATION. HE SUGGESTS THAT ABNORMAL DANGEROUS OFFENDERS SHOULD RECEIVE INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT IN INSTITUTIONS OF A LIMITED SIZE. ALSO CONSIDERED IMPORTANT IS A CONTINUING INTERPERSONAL CONTACT BETWEEN INMATES AND STAFF.
