PROJECT GOALS, ACTIVITIES, AND APPRAISAL FOR AN ALTERNATIVE RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DRUG RELATED PROBLEMS.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE TO PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAM, TO ESTABLISH URBAN INTAKE AND REENTRY CENTERS, TO ASSIST WITH REFERRALS AND DEVELOP COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND TO ESTABLISH A REGIONAL TRAINING CENTER FOR DRUG TREATMENT STAFF. THE PROGRAM USES THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY APPROACH WHICH EMPHASIZES FORMS OF GROUP ENCOUNTER AND A STATUS SYSTEM FOR PROGRESSION IN VARIOUS DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES. EVALUATION ACTIVITIES CONSISTED OF INTERVIEWS OF ADMINISTRATIVE, LINE STAFF, AND CLIENTS, AND INTERVIEWS OF MEMBERS OF THE ABRAXAS ERIE ADVISORY BOARD. DEMOGRAPHIC AND PROGRESS DATA ON ALL RESIDENTS ADMITTED THROUGH MARCH 31, 1974 WAS ALSO RECEIVED. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT CLIENT OUTCOME COULD NOT AS YET BE MEASURED, SINCE NONE HAD YET COMPLETED THE PROGRAM. THE CLIENT RETENTION RATE DID APPEAR TO BE HIGHER THAN MOST LONG-TERM RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS. THE MOST SERIOUS DEFICIENCIES WERE FOUND IN COMMUNITY LIAISON WORK, AND ARE REFLECTED IN IRREGULAR REFERRAL PATTERNS, SLOWNESS TO DEVELOP COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARDS, REENTRY CENTERS, AND COMMUNITY TRAINING PROGRAMS.
