TO COMBAT A SPECIFIC TYPE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT CALLED ACQUAINTANCE RAPE, THIS PACKAGE OF FOUR EDUCATIONAL FILMS AND ACCOMPANYING DISCUSSION GUIDE MATERIALS PROVIDES TEENAGERS WITH STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING SEXUAL ASSAULT.
Abstract
THE FILMS ARE INTENDED FOR USE IN JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, AND BY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE RAPE EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THEY TRY TO (1) INCEASE THE AWARENESS OF YOUNG ADULTS TO MISPERCEPTIONS AND STEREOTYPED SEX-ROLE BEHAVIORS THAT CAN LEAD TO RAPE, (2) ENHANCE THE COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS OF YOUNG PEOPLE, AND (3) PROVIDE A FRAMEWORK FOR DISCUSSING ASSERTIVE BEHAVIORS THAT A YOUNG ADULT MIGHT APPLY IN A THREATENING SITUATION. IN EACH OF THE FOUR VIGNETTES--DEPICTING A TEEN PARTY, A DATE, A GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOLERS AFTER A FOOTBALL TEAM VICTORY, AND A CAR BREAKDOWN ON THE HIGHWAY--A SEQUENCE OF EVENTS IS PORTRAYED THAT BEGINS IN CASUAL ENCOUNTER AND ENDS IN A RAPE-THREATENING SITUATION. IN SUBSEQUENT DISCUSSION, THE AUDIENCE IS LED TO RECOGNIZE ACQUAINTANCE RAPE AND TO UNDERSTAND TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL DYNAMICS THAT CAN LEAD TO IT. THE OVERALL MESSAGE OF THE EDUCATIONAL PACKAGE IS THAT MALES AND FEMALES IN THE DATING SITUATION WHO ASSERT THEIR INDIVIDUALITY WHILE RESPECTING THEIR PARTNERS ARE NOT LIKELY TO BECOME INVOLVED IN ACQUAINTANCE RAPE SITUATIONS.
