Abstract
This report from the Secretariat of the United Nations presents information on the activities of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to promote and support implementation of the protocol against the smuggling of migrants that supplements the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. The first section of the report presents an overview of Conference Resolution 5/3, the implementation of the protocol against the smuggling of migrants by land, sea, and air. The second section of the report details the preparation of an issue paper on the smuggling of migrants by sea, and outlines a set of issues that were discussed during the meetings. Also discussed are tools developed by UNODC to assist states parties in strengthening the integrity and security of travel and identity documents in order to decrease and stop the use misuse of these documents. The third section of the report discusses the activities of the UNODC to support the implementation of the protocol. These activities include prevention and raising-awareness, data collection and research, legislative assistance, strategic planning and policy development, criminal justice system response, protection and support, and regional and international cooperation.
