PRESENT AND PROPOSED COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR POLICE RECORDS DEALING WITH NAME INDEXES OF CRIMINALS, DISQUALIFIED DRIVERS, AND MISSING PERSONS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES METHODS OF INDEXING FOR SUCH SYSTEMS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE FACT THAT THE SPELLING OF A NAME IS NOT ALWAYS CONSISTENT WITH ITS PRONUNCIATION. THESE METHODS OF INDEXING INCLUDE STRICT ALPHABETICAL ORDERING, PHONETIC NAME GROUPING, AND PHONETIC CODING (KNOWN AS SOUNDEX CODING IN THE UNITED STATES).
